Donald Trump believes it is up to China, not the United States, to come to the negotiating table on trade, the White House said on Tuesday.

The US President has accused Beijing of reneging on a major Boeing deal.

鈥淭he ball is in China鈥檚 court. China needs to make a deal with us.

鈥淲e don鈥檛 have to make a deal with them,鈥 said a statement from Trump read out by Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt at a briefing.

鈥淭here鈥檚 no difference between China and any other country except they are much larger,鈥 she added.

Leavitt鈥檚 comments came after Trump accused China of going back on a major deal with US aviation giant Boeing 鈥 following a Bloomberg news report that Beijing ordered airlines not to take further deliveries of the company鈥檚 jets.

The report also said that Beijing requested Chinese carriers to pause purchases of aircraft-related equipment and parts from US firms.

鈥淭hey just reneged on the big Boeing deal, saying that they will 鈥榥ot take possession鈥 of ... aircraft,鈥 said Trump in a Truth Social post, referring to China.

He did not provide further details on the Boeing agreement.

Trump has slapped new tariffs on friend and foe since returning to the presidency this year, but has reserved his heaviest blows for China 鈥 imposing additional 145% levies on many Chinese imports.

European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen told German weekly Die Zeit that the relationship between the EU and the United States was 鈥渃omplicated,鈥 after Trump imposed 10% tariffs on the bloc.

Asked about potential negotiations, von der Leyen said Europeans were 鈥渟etting out our position clearly, and the Americans are doing the same鈥.

Separately, Ottawa offered tariff relief to automakers on condition that they maintain production in Canada, fearing Trump鈥檚 policies could trigger a flight of the key manufacturing sector to the US.

Trump took aim at Beijing again on Tuesday, saying on Truth Social that China did not fulfil its commitments under an earlier trade deal. He appeared to be referencing a pact that marked a truce in both sides鈥 escalating tariff war during his first term.

He said China bought only 鈥渁 portion of what they agreed to buy,鈥 charging that Beijing had 鈥渮ero respect鈥 for his predecessor Joe Biden鈥檚 administration.

Since the start of the year, Trump has imposed steep duties on imports from China, alongside a 10% 鈥渂aseline鈥 tariff on many US trading partners.

His administration recently widened exemptions from these tariffs, excluding certain tech products like smartphones and laptops from the global 10% tariff and latest 125% levy on China.

Trump also vowed to protect US farmers on Tuesday, noting on social media that they were often 鈥減ut on the Front Line with our adversaries, such as China,鈥 when there were trade tussles.

Many Chinese imports still face the total 145% additional tariff, or at least an earlier 20% levy that Trump rolled out over China鈥檚 alleged role in the fentanyl supply chain.

In response, Beijing has introduced counter-tariffs targeting US agricultural goods, and it later retaliated with a sweeping 125% levy of its own on imported US products.

China鈥檚 foreign ministry did not immediately respond to AFP queries on the aircraft deliveries, and Boeing has declined to comment on the Bloomberg report.

Boeing shares closed 2.4% down on Tuesday.
