Four government agencies announced in a statement 鈥渢he immediate cancellation of approximately $400 million in federal grants and contracts to due to the school鈥檚 continued inaction in the face of persistent harassment of 鈥.
Trump said earlier this week that he would cut funding for schools that allow 鈥渋llegal protests,鈥 his latest threat to turn off the flow of federal money to the country鈥檚 education system.
US campuses including Columbia鈥檚 were rocked last year by student protests against following the October 7, 2023 attacks, which ignited accusations of .
Friday鈥檚 statement, issued by the US General Services Administration, said the cuts were the 鈥渇irst round of action鈥 鈥 and that additional cancellations are expected to follow.
鈥淪ince October 7, Jewish students have faced relentless violence, intimidation, and anti-Semitic harassment on their campuses 鈥 only to be ignored by those who are supposed to protect them,鈥 said Secretary of Education Linda McMahon.
鈥淯niversities must comply with all federal anti-discrimination laws if they are going to receive federal funding,鈥 she said.
鈥淔or too long, Columbia has abandoned that obligation to Jewish students studying on its campus. Today, we demonstrate to Columbia and other universities that we will not tolerate their appalling inaction any longer.鈥
