remain on track for glory, even if the last six weeks have been a challenging period.
That鈥檚 the view of defender Francis de Vries in the wake of Saturday鈥檚 2-2 draw with Sydney FC. The result, achieved , extended their unbeaten run to 12 games, dating back to mid-January. However, it was also their fifth draw in the last six games, a run which has seen their cushion at the top of the A-League shrink considerably.
But the All Whites fullback believes confidence levels throughout the squad remain high.
鈥滻t鈥檚 in a good place at the moment,鈥 de Vries told the Herald. 鈥淲e are looking forward to the next game and to the playoffs as well, but we know that we have a job to do before that. There are three games to go and this is often how football seasons go, that you work very hard for a long time and it usually comes down to the last few games.鈥
There are all kinds of permutations but the Black Knights (47 points) are being pursued strongly by both Melbourne City (43 points) and Western United (41 points, ahead of Sunday鈥檚 clash with Western Sydney Wanderers). 鈥 and the playoff advantages that come with it 鈥 but it鈥檚 not entirely straightforward, as their run home includes away fixtures against Melbourne Victory and Western United. The pressure has ramped up but de Vries is unperturbed.
鈥滻t鈥檚 something that you don鈥檛 consciously think about a lot whilst you鈥檙e in it,鈥 said de Vries. 鈥淲hen you鈥檙e analysing it from the outside, you鈥檙e looking at the bigger picture, but for us as players, it鈥檚 just about what鈥檚 on the cards next week. We know we鈥檝e got [Melbourne] Victory next and every game鈥檚 tough as every team鈥檚 got something to play for and lots of teams are hitting form. We are continuing to stick to our guns, stay playing the way that we want to and we鈥檒l see what comes off the back of that.鈥
De Vries is one of only three players, along with goalkeeper Alex Paulsen and striker Guillermo May, who have started every match this season. It鈥檚 quite an achievement, given he arrived at the club via local football and hadn鈥檛 been in a professional environment since early 2023, when he left Sweden. . Saturday鈥檚 crucial 68th-minute equaliser was his second goal of the season, to go with six assists. He has touched the ball than any other Auckland FC player across this campaign 鈥 and has also sent in more than 100 crosses with his educated left foot.

鈥滻 feel very proud of the season that I鈥檝e had,鈥 admitted de Vries. 鈥淥ften football is difficult. You鈥檙e tired or there鈥檚 pressure or there鈥檚 discipline and everything. So to come away from it with a feeling of satisfaction, especially after these moments where you can personally contribute to the team doing well is a really cool feeling.鈥
De Vries had mixed emotions after Saturday鈥檚 match. He wasn鈥檛 pleased with the nature of Sydney鈥檚 two goals 鈥 both spectacular long range efforts from young star Adrian Segecic 鈥 and felt a bit 鈥渞esponsible鈥 for the first, believing he could have closed down the play quicker. But he was thrilled with the team鈥檚 response from there.
鈥漌e are a tight knit group and that鈥檚 a great thing to show together on the field, the way we fought back,鈥 said de Vries.
After Logan Rogerson鈥檚 鈥渃rucial鈥 35th minute goal, de Vries popped up with his emphatic finish, after a foray by captain Hiroki Sakai.
鈥漌hen it fell to me, I thought, okay, that鈥檚 a good chance,鈥 said de Vries. 鈥淸In the moment] it鈥檚 just good contact on the ball, get the technique right and then see where it ends up.鈥
That goal was the cue for a wildly open game to become even more frantic, as both teams chased a winner. It was precarious but Auckland FC had the better opportunities, with Jake Brimmer blocked from close range and hitting the post after a goalkeeping blunder.
鈥滻 think half the boys [were] already celebrating before he鈥檚 even kicked it,鈥 said de Vries of Brimmer鈥檚 chance. 鈥淚t鈥檚 one of them that, on a different day, those things go your way. Unfortunately [on Saturday] it didn鈥檛.鈥
