A man who rescued a yachtsman whose boat burned and sank off the coast of Hawke鈥檚 Bay has recounted the harrowing ordeal.
Kyle Sykes told the Herald the flames from the boat were as 鈥渂ig as a house鈥, had wrecked the small yacht, and had 鈥渂lack smoke roaring off it鈥.
Sykes and his crewmates Alex Robertson and Simon Carrington pulled up beside the stricken yachtie in his liferaft and pulled him aboard his boat, My Sexy Mistress, yesterday morning.
鈥淲e followed the helicopter over to where the guy was in the little liferaft, pulled up along beside him, shook his hand and told him, 鈥楳y name is Kyle, welcome aboard My Sexy Mistress, and I鈥檓 pleased you鈥檙e alive mate鈥."

Sykes recounted the ordeal: 鈥淲e were fishing away there for about 20 minutes [yesterday afternoon] and then I looked over and seen a little bit of smoke in the distance.
鈥淚 sort of thought, 鈥楬mm, I wonder if someone鈥檚 having a big fire at M膩hia. Then it got more smoky, so I got the binoculars out ... and then I just seen the tip of his mast on the horizon and smoke straight behind it.
鈥淚 though, 鈥極h no, no no, something鈥檚 not right here鈥. Then I heard the helicopter, and that was it, man, rods up, I just decided that was it, we were off,鈥 Sykes said.
The sea was rough as Sykes and his crew motored towards the burning wreck.

鈥淭hen, seeing the helicopter hovering and sort of circling around. We couldn鈥檛 figure out what was going on there, so we just keep pushing our way towards where the smoke was,鈥 Sykes said.
鈥淲e got all the way out there and realised there were flames nearly as high as a house. It was pretty out of control,鈥 he said.
Somebody in the helicopter pointed Sykes and his crew towards a liferaft floating nearby.
The crew pulled the man, who was in and out of consciousness, onto My Sexy Mistress.

鈥淗e was in shock. It was a bit of a scary ordeal all round for the three of us. It was a bit of a special moment, but was a bit scary at the same time," Sykes said.
鈥淲e pulled his liferaft on and made our way back to Clifton Beach, where my trailer was, so we could get the helicopter to meet us there.鈥
Maritime NZ鈥檚 Rescue Co-ordination Centre was notified that an emergency beacon had been activated at 11.22am.
The boat was located about five nautical miles northeast of Cape Kidnappers.
The centre then requested maritime radio relay mayday broadcasts.
When the rescue helicopter arrived on scene, the crew spotted a liferaft with one person in it.
Coastguard Hawke鈥檚 Bay sent seven crew members to the fire.
鈥淎s the sailor was safe, we dealt with the fire. Although we managed to put the fire out, the boat was too badly damaged to enable a safe tow back to Napier. And leaving it afloat was not really an option.鈥

Sykes shied away from the word 鈥榟ero鈥, saying he was just pleased he was out on the water when he was needed.
鈥淭he biggest thing I was concerned about at the time, I didn鈥檛 know how many people were going to be on board.鈥
