A 111-year-old cottage in the  suburb of Aramoho has been gutted by a fire, with the blaze destroying the property in minutes.

was called to the address on Roberts Ave just before 10am on Sunday.

Fire and Emergency senior station officer Shane Dudley said it took about 20 minutes to control the fire, and the house was 鈥渁 total write-off鈥.

鈥淭here were a couple of hours of salvage and overhaul,鈥 he said.

鈥淲e had to put up an aerial ladder and take the roof off because of the structural damage.鈥

Four fire engines were at the scene, with an operational support crew and two specialist fire investigators.

No one was inside the house when the fire started, and it was too early to tell what caused it, Dudley said.

Owner Steve Watkins said his house was built in 1914 and was originally a blacksmith鈥檚 cottage.

鈥淚 was down at work and got a call saying a couple of appliances were on the way to my house,鈥 he said.

鈥淚t just didn鈥檛 seem real. I drove home, turned the corner, and the whole front of it was up (in flames).鈥

Watkins said firefighters, who were friends, did an amazing job controlling the blaze.

A on his behalf.

鈥淭he whole thing has been humbling and overwhelming,鈥 he said. 鈥淧eople I don鈥檛 even know have been helping out with $10 or $20. I just want to thank them.鈥

Dudley said the speed at which house fires spread was more about furnishings than the structure itself.

鈥淢odern furnishings burn a lot quicker than they used to, and a house fire will double in size every 30 seconds.

鈥淔rom our point of view, it鈥檚 a timely reminder to .鈥

Watkins, owner of Phoenix Auto Painters, said he had put a lot of effort into the property and his business.

鈥淚鈥檝e been here for around 6.5 years. My dad was a carpenter, so I could pretty much do all the work myself,鈥 he said.

鈥淚鈥檝e just got to get up, keep functioning and roll with these punches.

鈥淭his is just another chapter in the book, and mine is a good read.鈥
